It is always hard to lose a pet. We wanted to share a letter we received recently from a client.
Dear Dr. Kathy,
As you may already know by now, Muffin Moffett died peacefully at your clinic early this morning, November 22nd. Dr. Rouen was her attending physician at the time of her death.
I just wanted to say a sincere, heartfelt THANK YOU for the outstanding care you and the entire staff at the clinic provided Muffin with during the time we were together. Everybody who I had come in contact with was very professional and compassionate and your support was very much appreciated.
Although people don’t place obituaries in the newspaper for pets, I’ve written one so that you may have some insight into her life. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Again, please express my sincere thanks and appreciation for all you and your staff have done for Muffin and myself over the years. When (not if) I get another cat, we hopefully will see you then. Best Wishes for a very Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous 2011.
With sincere appreciation and thanks,
Mark Moffet
OBITUARY
Muffin Moffett, 18, of Lancaster, died peacefully at the Neffsville Veterinary Clinic early Monday morning, November 22, 2010 after an illness. At her side were Dr. Amanda Rouen, of Neffsville Veterinary Clinic and her owner, Mark Moffett.
Early in her life, she enjoyed lying in the sun, taking long walks in the yard and sleeping outdoors when the weather was warm (although she did not like the “big, bad crows” which flew overheard). It was during that phase of her life she earned the title, “Spoiled Rotten.” She enjoyed playing her favorite games: Mints, Fish and Mouse and especially loved canned tuna and Little Friskies wet cat food. She especially enjoyed falling asleep while watching “Star Trek” with her owner. Even though it was his bed, she always wound up sleeping where she wanted, usually on one of the pillows.
During the last weeks of her life, she looked forward to longer and longer naps buried under the covers. Even though she couldn’t walk as steadily as she used to, she still managed to get up on the bed and fall asleep while watching “Star Trek.” On the morning of her death, she took her last drink of water at her house, after which she rode in the car to the Neffsville Veterinary Clinic.
She is survived by her owner, Mark Moffett and her uncle, Dale Moffett, who would always came to take care of her while Mark was away. The family wishes to thank Dale Moffett, Katherine Schaeffer of Country Pets Grooming and particularly the fine, compassionate staff at Neffsville Veterinary Clinic, particularly her primary care physician, Dr. Kathy Nyland and the attending physician at her death, Dr. Amanda Rouen, as well as all the outstanding staff members at the facility.

The loss of a pet can be upsetting experience for owners. Many of our clients have family and friends they can talk to during this emotional time. For those who need support or for those who are dealing with children and the how to explain the loss to them, we would like to share information about Metropolitan Veterinary Associates & Emergency Service’s Pet Loss Support Group. Their pet group is designed to provide grieving pet parents with a safe, confidential environment to share their feelings with others who have experienced pet loss.
The meetings are held once a month onsite at Metropolitan and are free of charge for our clients (all family members are invited to attend). The group is led by Dr. Cari Thomson and co-led by psychiatrist, Dr. Carol Tavani.
Please call or visit the website for Metropolitan if you would like to find meeting dates and times and general information and recommendations on obtaining help outside of the group setting.

One of our clients, Robert Allison, who owns three magnificent cats Hannah, Nala and Simba recently completed the Client Satisfaction Survey through Pet Portals. We are always appreciative of the feedback, but Mr. Allisons’s comments spoke to the many reasons why pet owners select Neffsville Veterinary Clinic.

Mr. Allison’s comments on our telephone skills:

“Everyone I speak with on the phone is very friendly and interested in my pets’ heath and condition.”

His thoughts on the clinic’s appearance:

“The office feels like a resort for pets. Other vets have had small waiting areas and a definite pet odor about them (not strong, but noticeable). The office at NVC is extremely well kept and everyone there is friendly and helpful.”

What he has to say about our customer service:

“Several times I arrived early for an appointment as I underestimated the amount of traffic I would encounter. Most times the ‘kids’ are able to be seen right away even with the early arrival. I think it a truly wonderful idea to be able to check out and pay while still in the exam room. That means less time in the carriers for the ‘kids.’”

His comments on the medical care his pets received:

“I recently had to have Simba, one of my cats to PETS for an infection in his paw. When I called the following morning to set the follow-up appointment, as soon as I mentioned Simba’s name, the response was, ‘I see he was at PETS…we have the information and were about ready to call you, when would you like to come in?’ Extremely efficient and on top of what the pets need!”

His overall opinions on his experiences with the staff and doctors at Neffsville Veterinary Clinic:

“I am extremely satisfied with everything at NVC. I just wish I had brought my pets there earlier. The staff, care and pricing are all well beyond my expectations.”

Thank you Mr. Allison for your kind words!

Margaret Jefferson came to us in March because her cat, Isis was not “herself.” She would go upstairs and hide under the bed and in the closet. She had severe constipation and when she did have a bowel movement, the stool was very small and hard. “Isis had been so healthy. At 17 the only reason I had to bring her to the vet was for shots and nail trims,” commented Mrs. Jefferson. Isis continued to deteriorate and she then began dragging her back end. An x-ray later revealed spondylosis.

Spondylosis is a condition by which there is an arthritic bridging of the vertebrae. This is what caused Isis to have difficulty squatting to go to the bathroom and jumping on her owner’s lap.

Because of the diagnosis, Dr. Kathy recommended Adequan injections. Adequan is normally used to treat canine arthritis, which in many cases can be a painful and debilitating disease, however it can be managed. Adequan helps prevent the cartilage in your pet’s joints from wearing away. The goal of the doctor is to slow down the progression of arthritis formation in the pet’s joint, keeping the cartilage healthy and intact, so that the bone in the joint cannot touch other bones.

The injection is administered two times a week for four weeks and then is given once a month as a maintenance. It begins working in the joint in about two hours and stays in the joint for about three days. “I was nervous about giving the injections, but the nurses showed me how to do it and after two trials, I was comfortable with the procedure,” added Mrs. Jefferson.

“Within a week and a half Isis had returned to her normal self. She was eating well, requesting treats and sitting on my lap. To me Adequan is a Miracle Drug. I thought my cat was dying. It was so sad to watch her suffer and experience such a drastic change in her health such a short period of time,” said Mrs. Jefferson.

He was our very first guinea pig, our first “kid” together as a couple. We loved him dearly, & Neffsville went above and beyond to help us in our time of need. Though Bear’s surgery didn’t pan out as we had hoped, we know we did everything we could for him and that he was in good, capable hands with all of you. Thank you all for your care and compassion for our Bear-man. Signed Amanda & Daniel Klotz, Shadow, Mo, Mortar, Mason & Jacques.
