Dog Training Classes

Does your dog take you for a walk?  Does he/she jump all over your guests?  Is he/she out of control around other dogs?  Isn’t it time you teach our dog some basic manners?  Well, look no further.  Neffsville Veterinary Clinic offers Canine Education for dogs of all ages, taught by a professional dog trainer .  You will learn to utilize positive and gentle training techniques to allow you and your dog to achieve success in basic, everday manners.  There is no ‘cookie cutter” fit for every dog.  In our classes you will learn what best motivates your dog. Our dedicated staff utilizes the best practices to help make your relationship with your pet the most rewarding it can be.

Classes are held in our indoor gym area and are 50-60 minutes in length.  There is a limit of 5 dogs in each class (unless otherwise specified), so please register early.  A minimum of 3 students is required before a class will be commenced.  Your reservation for the class will be confirmed when the enrollment form and payment is received.  Owners will receive an information packet outlining specifics, such as required vaccinations, equipment needs, dates and times at the orientation session.

Puppy Obedience – Group Class

Tending to your puppy’s obedience is the smartest first step of being a responsible dog owner. Our 6-week class for puppies 4-6 months in age will greatly enhance the bond between you and your puppy.  Here, you will introduce them to basic obedience skills such as sit, down, stay, leave it, and come.  You will also teach them important socialization skills with humans and other puppies.  Many puppy behavior issues such as jumping, nipping, potty training, chewing, and barking will also be addressed.

Class Length: 6 – One hour sessions

Prerequisites: Current Vaccines: DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies (proof from your veterinarian is required).

Basic Obedience – Group Class

 This class is for dogs over 6 months of age.  You will learn how to communicate effectively with your dog while teaching basic obedience skills such as sit, down, come, stay, and heel.  We will work on these skills from a distance, with mild distractions, and by using corresponding hand signals.  Impulse control will also be touched upon during this course.  All of these skills will prepare you and your dog for our Advanced Obedience Class, other dog sports, and certifications.

Class Length: 6 – One hour sessions

Prerequisites: Current Vaccines: DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies (proof from your veterinarian is required).

Tricks Class

This is where the fun really takes off!  This class is for graduates of the puppy or basic class. Teach your dog to crawl, wave, roll over, weave through your legs, put one container inside another or put toys away. The class is individualized for the participants. We ask what would you like to learn with your dog ?  What would your dog have fun doing? This is a wonderful way to strengthen the bond between you and your dog while you are both having fun!

Class Length: 6 – One hour sessions.  The is open enrollment, so you can start any time!

Prerequisites: Current Vaccines: DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies (proof from your veterinarian is required).

Advanced Obedience – Group Class

This class is a continuation of Basic Obedience.  Some tricks will be introduced for fun; however it is primarily geared toward preparing you and your dog for the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen Test.  We will cover all 10 steps of the test and lay the foundation for other activities such as AKC’s obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events.  A mock test will be given and the official Canine Good Citizen Test will be offered at the conclusion of this course. 

Prerequisites: Current Vaccines: DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies (proof from your veterinarian is required). Basic Obedience or equivalent.

AKC  Canine Good Citizen® Testing and Certification

Started in 1989, the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification is a program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community.  The CGC Program is a 2-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs.  All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test will receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.  Many landlords, insurance companies, and therapy dog organizations require or suggest a CGC certificate.  Various testing times will be available. 

Prerequisites: Current Vaccines: DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies (proof from your veterinarian is required). Advanced Obedience or equivalent.

Private Lessons

We also offer private lessons for owners who would like one-on-one training.  The sessions will be designed by the trainer and owner to cater to the needs of the dog and determine how many sessions are required to achieve their goals.  The sessions will be held either at our training facility at Neffsville Veterinary Clinic or the owner’s home / desired location.
